Melkbosstrand Solar Installations

The City of Melkbosstrand has taken major strides in recent years to become more environmentally friendly, and one of the most significant ways it has done so is through the installation of solar energy systems. The municipality installed its first solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of the Melkbosstrand Civic Centre in 2011, and since then, several more PV systems have been installed on other municipal buildings. In total, the city has installed over 1 MWp of solar PV capacity, making it one of the leading municipalities in South Africa in terms of solar energy usage.

Melkbosstrand solar installations have not only helped to reduce its carbon footprint, but has also saved significant amounts of money on electricity costs. In the first year after the installation of the Civic Centre's PV system, for example, the city saved over R40 000 on its electricity bill. With continued growth in solar installations, it is expected that these savings will only increase in future. Solar energy is an important part of Melkbosstrand's commitment to sustainability, and with continued growth in installations, the municipality is well on its way to becoming a leader in renewable energy usage.
